Churches

2018-04-15

Inspired by a recent trip to the Museum of Old and New art (MOMA) in Hobart, Tasmania. I have created what I hope to be the first in many pieces of digital art.

The program that generates the images is called Churches.

HTML5 Canvas and Javascript were used to render the images. The effect was achieved using the createLinearGradient function available on Canvas, and the blur and sepia CSS filters.

You can view the source code for the program on Github.

The program iteratively renders a number of lines using a linear gradient that interpolates between dark and light shades of black. As the lines converge to the middle they increase in height with some randomness added.

To my surprise with the randomness removed for line height, a sort of pseudo-3D effect is created that makes the churches look more like skyscrapers. Maybe there are some parallels between churches and the skyscrapers you see housing some of the wealthiest businesses in the world? I know, very deep right?
